Include correspondence, 1866-1905, of John Herbert Claiborne, concerning praise for his book, appointment as Petersburg health officer, participation in various medical societies, congratulatory letters on anniversary of fifty years of medical practice, genealogy, and letters of sympathy to his family on his death. Also include papers, 1861-1865, pertaining to his service in the Civil War, including commissions, permission to purchase a pistol (1865), and his loyalty oath; and papers and printed materials, 1901-1905, pertaining to his membership in the United Confederate Veterans. Also include papers, 1875-1895, pertaining to the establishment of the Virginia Board of Health and Vital statistics, including a mortuary report, 1895, for Petersburg and letters concerning hospital relief for City Point and statistical methodology.
